Renowned Nigerian sociopolitical activist Reno Omokri recently took to X to share his candid perspective on a pivotal aspect of the Nigerian political landscape. In a thought-provoking post, Omokri asserted that one of the major missteps of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2023 elections was the decision not to give Governor Nyesom Wike the vice-presidential slot.

Omokri pointed out that the election results were decided by a margin of less than two million votes in favor of the All Progressives Congress (APC). His argument revolved around the belief that allocating the vice-presidential candidacy to Governor Wike could have substantially impacted the outcome in favor of the PDP.

“The biggest mistake we made in the PDP during the #NigerianElections2023 was not giving Wike the vice-presidential slot of our party,” Omokri asserted. He further elaborated on the potential influence Wike could have exerted by garnering votes from key states like Rivers, Oyo, Abia, Enugu, and Benue, especially with the support of the G-5.

Omokri’s analysis delved into the pragmatic realm of politics, emphasizing the necessity of making strategic decisions that align with the prevailing political landscape. He recognized Governor Wike’s alpha personality and assertiveness, qualities that might traditionally be perceived as hindrances to playing a secondary role. However, Omokri highlighted the pragmatic approach, stating, “In politics, you do not do what you like to do. You do what you have to do.”

The sociopolitical commentator concluded by noting that, given the circumstances, he would not typically support such a move if all things were equal. Still, he emphasized the need to adapt to the exigencies of politics and make decisions that maximize the potential for electoral success.

Omokri’s post has sparked discussions and reflections within political circles, prompting a reassessment of the PDP’s strategic decisions during the 2023 elections. As Nigeria navigates its political landscape, the lessons drawn from this analysis may shape future electoral strategies within the nation’s political parties.
